Contest Rules view as pdf

Amended August 2011

1) Our regularly scheduled contests are open to members.  Dues must be paid in full to participate in the monthly and End of the Year Contests.

 PRINT CATEGORIES:

2) An individual may enter up to 3 images in each of the following categories:

a) Open
b) Black and White
c) Novice
Definition:  Novice may be applied to a member who is new to the club but  not new to photography, new to digital photography or new to post editing techniques.  A member can move out of  the Novice category when he/she feels comfortable competing in the Open and Black and White categories or when points earned during the club year place the member in first place in the Novice Category.  Once moved from Novice, a member cannot return to compete in that category.  Any subject may be entered in the Novice
category but must adhere to regular QVPC size and format rules.

DIGITAL CATEGORIES:

a)  Open

b)  Nature

c)  Novice

d)  Multiscreen themes

PERMITTED: (taken from NECCC interclub competition guidelines)

Basic post editing, digital manipulation including the use of software filters, collages, emulsion transfers, hand coloring with transparent oils or dyes, commercially-made
pints, wherein the only manipulation performed by the non-entrant printer is in the nature of burning/dodging and color/contrast adjustment and their electronic
equivalents.  Any other form of manipulation of the print or digital file by the entrant (burning, dodging, masking, printing through texture screens, digital enhancement, combining of images, etc.) is considered acceptable.

PROHIBITED:

The use of any photography or artwork that is not the original work of the entrant.  This includes clip-art of any kind, or any artwork (i.e. digital manipulation, airbrushing, coloring, etc.) performed on either the originating file or print by anyone other than the competitor.  Print spotting to remove blemishes is not considered artwork.

In Black & White only:  the use of more than a single color in toning, dyeing, or painting in an image. More than one color automatically categorizes the print as “color” not onochrome (B&W).

 NATURE CATEGORY – (digital competition)

Nature photography is restricted to the use of the photographic process to depict observations from all branches of natural history, except anthropology and archeology, in such a fashion that a well informed person will be able to identify the subject material and to certify as to its honest presentation. The story telling value of a photography must be weighed more than the pictorial quality while maintaining a high technical quality.  Human elements shall not be present, except where those human elements enhance the nature story.  The presence of scientific bands, scientific tags or radio collars on wild animals is permissible.  Photographs of artificially produced hybrid plants or animals, mounted specimens, or obviously set arrangements, are ineligible, as is any form of manipulation that alters the truth of the photographic statement. No techniques that add to, relocate, replace, or remove pictorial elements except by cropping are permitted. Techniques that enhance the presentation of the photograph without changing the nature story or the pictorial content are permitted.  All adjustments must appear natural.

Enhancements to make a scene more  closely represent the original scene photographed are permitted but must not change the truth of the original nature story. Cropping and horizontal flipping are acceptable modifications.  Removing spots is allowed.  Adding elements to an image, removing pictorial elements from your image other than by cropping, combining separate images or rearranging and/or cloning and/or copying elements in your image are NOT acceptable.

4) All print entries shall have a picture area that is a minimum of 5 X 7 (for NECCC competitions 8 x 10)  and no larger than 16 x 20.  All entries must be matted and/or mounted. The maximum size of the presentation, including the matte or mount shall be no larger than 16×20.  Images may be submitted on foam core.

5) Winning pictures may not be  re-entered in any regular contest night competition.  However, it is expected that these pictures  will be entered in our Contest of the Year, and in competitions with  other clubs

6)  The entrant must be the maker of the picture,  but the maker is not required to do his or her own developing or printing.  It is acceptable, but not preferable, for  members with little experience and who would like to develop their post editing  skills to request a more experienced club member or friend to perform basic  post editing (curves, levels, shadows/brightness, etc).  Cropping, however, should be done or directed  by the maker as the crop directly affects the story/subject of the image.

7)  Each picture MUST have the  following information on the back of the SUBMITTED ENTRY:

a)  The makers first and last name (please  don’t abbreviate or use initials).

b)  A title that is different than any other picture you own.  The title often distinguishes the subject  matter such as “Mary” or “Goldenrod”.  The title should never be reused on another picture.  If you have two pictures of Mary, you can  call one “Mary #1 and the other “Mary #2”,  etc.  We encourage members to use titles  on “Nature” pictures that dentify  the subject to allow for submission in NECCC nature contests.

c)  The class in which it is entered

d) The date it is entered

e)  Prints in which the subject matter does not make clear which direction  is up ,should have an arrow on the back with the word “up”.

f)  Digital entries must be submitted to  the digital competition coordinator NO LATER THAN 3 DAYS PRIOR TO THE  COMPETITION.

g)  Digital entries must be labeled as  follows:

  • N$LastName,FirstName$title.jpg
  • BW$LastName,FirstName$title.jpg
  • NOVICE$LastName,FirstName$title.jpg
  • ThemeTitle$Lname,Fname$title.jpg
  • Example:  O$Latraverse,Lois$AfternoonSun.jpg

For Example:Spiral$Lname,Fname$spiralbasket.jpg (Multiscreen themes                must have a title.)

8)Matted  prints should have a same size backing board.  ie  an 11×14 matted print should  have a solid backing sized 11 x 14 adhered to the print.

NEW for 2011

9) A Judge will  continue to critique each image but will also give that image a point value.  The points earned per maker in each  competition is accumulated, along with a single point for each image entered in each competition for a yearend total.  Awards will be presented at the second meeting in May.

Judges will use  the following criteria to award points:

  • 10 points:   would  indicate an outstanding image with no technical flaws, all photography rules  have been adhered to.
  •  9 points:  would indicate an excellent image with minor  flaws
  •  8 points:  would indicate a very good image…but  composition, editing technique needs some adjustments
  •  7 points:  would indicate a good image…..maker needs a  better understanding of composition, post editing, etc.
  •  6 points:  would indicate a fair image…maker may need  to improve composition, printing, post editing, etc.

10)  Ribbons will be awarded to all winners and,  in the case of a tie, a ribbon will be awarded to each winner.

11)  All competition category winners will be  entered into the Annual End of the Year Contest.  The competition is held in early May and  judged by a panel of 3 judges who preferably have not judged during the club  year.  Winners are announced at the Awards  Ceremony at the second meeting in May.
