Nature photographer and CT Audubon Society Naturalists, Fran Baranski, will present “Finding and Getting Close to Wildlife” at 7:00pm on Wednesday, February 15th, and the Pomfret Audubon Center.

Fran will discuss the reasons why we have difficulty getting close to animals. Once you understand them and develop strategies to overcome them, you’ll be on your way to making closer encounters with wildlife. He will continue by describing specific techniques he has used to get within touching distance of many local animals. A related photo presentation will be included.

This program will benefit both photographers and those who are simply interested in observing Nature from a closer vantage point.

February brings us a digital competition. The categories are Novice, Open and Nature. You may enter the Novice category if you are new to competitive photography or new to digital and post editing or if you just feel more comfortable starting out here. The special subjects are “Horsing Around”, “Oops”, and “HDR”. Photos entered into the special subjects categories need to meet the nature of the subject first and foremost…but technical quality is also considered a factor in judging. So pay special attention to the topic and then give us your interpretation!

You must be a member to enter the competition but you can bring a check to the meeting and participate that evening. Membership dues are $30 individual and $40 family…for the year. Deadline for submission of entries is January 29th.

Entries should be sized for a horizontal picture, 1024 pixels on the width and the height will adjust accordingly. If your image is a vertical image, 768 on the height and let the width adjust accordingly. Resolution is always 72 dpi.

For QVPC competition rules of entry and how to submit, please follow the Navigation bar from Club information to Competition Rules.

Meet us at Karen Leaf Photography’s studio for professional backdrops, studio lights and models!

Bring your camera and tripods and allow yourself to be creative. Even if you are usually a lover of nature and the outdoors and don’t see yourself as a portrait photographer, come by Karen’s studio and see how much fun you can have. Everyone likes to take family shots and photos of their children and grandchildren. This is an opportunity to learn the dos and don’ts…so don’t miss it.

There are 2 factors here. 1) The models give us their time in exchange for images that they can use in their portfolios. So, it is expected that participants choose 2 of their best shots to send to Karen and she will make sure the models get them. 2) There MAY be a model charge of $5 per person. Will update this when details are final.

NOTE:This event would take the place of our normally scheduled 3rd week of the month meeting at the Pomfret Audubon Center.

UPDATE POSTED 1/14: DUE TO STRONG INTEREST IN MODEL NIGHT WE ARE LIMITING PARTICIPATION TO 20 PHOTOGRAPHERS. THE STUDIO SPACE IS LIMITED. THIS IS A CLUB SPONSORED EVENT SO PRIORITY MUST BE GIVEN TO MEMBERS. NON-MEMBER FEE IS $35…OR, A BETTER DEAL IS TO JOIN QVPC FOR $30. THIS IS STILL A GREAT DEAL AS MOST MODEL NIGHT EVENTS COST $50 TO $75. YOUR $30 WILL ALLOW YOU TO PARTICIPATE IN CLUB COMPETITIONS AND OTHER PROGRAMS FOR THE REMAINDER OF THE YEAR. JOIN AT ANY CLUB EVENT AT THE AUDUBON CENTER, 218 DAY RD., POMFRET OR BRING CASH ON MODEL NIGHT

Items to photograph are really endless, and hopefully your imagination is starting to kick in and you can find all kinds of items around the house to bring. The more items we have to choose from the better, so start collecting them now and we’ll see you on the 19th

Regrettably our fall prints did not make it into the fall competition. They were shipped Priority Mail on October 18th to meet the 24th deadline. The competition was held on October 31st. I was told the label came off during shipping even though it was affixed with shipping tape. It was lost for more than 2 weeks before it went to Skip Hoyt, the Greater Lynn organizer of the print competition. Skip said when it came back with no label the competition had been completed so he thought the images had been judged and he put a new label on and sent it back to us. Whatever happened the images will get judged at the winter competition along with our new entries. The club will not be penalized and NECCC will pick up our extra shipping costs. In addition, Bill Barnett and Cindy Gosselin (NECCC coordinators) will adjust the scores to reflect the scores of the fall competition.

The electronic competition scores can be found at http://www.neccc.org
